You do have to feel sorry for the ex-Newcastle manager, who got sacked for effectively making Newcastle successful. Ok, at least more successful than any of their recent managers efforts. When was the last time Newcastle lifted a trophy, more to the point a league title?
At least Chris Hughton got the Magpies promoted straightaway the year after they got relegated, more than neighbours Middlesborough have managed. Also they ran away with the title during their year in the Championship.
What is even more strange is that Hughton was sacked because he struggled to win his past five games, granted he did suffer a defeat to West Brom and a thrashing to Bolton Wanderers.
Newcastle United’s board claim they need a manager now who has more experience of Premier League management, to help reach the next level. I mean, do they expect to be challenging for the title or something?
Hughton’s reign at Newcastle has been nothing but extraordinary after a difficult start. How many rookie manager’s can claim they held champions Chelsea at home but defeated them at Stamford Bridge in the cup.
Or even more impressively defeating Arsenal at the Emirates and come away with a clean sheet. Let alone the humiliation they inflicted on rivals Sunderland to, with the 5-1 demolition job at St. James Park.
At the end of the day it is the board that make the decisions, but it seems Newcastle have gained a reputation of hiring and firing managers at will, the only honours that the Toon Army can realistically challenge Chelsea for.
It is not clear how a different manager would of made much of a better start than Newcastle has made. Chris Hughton is a talented manager who made the best out of a team, which featured good Championship rated players. Maybe this could be his chance to manage a team with more potential, but only time will tell.
As a Liverpool fan, I am slightly happy that the Newcastle board made this decision in a week in which Liverpool have to play them. Liverpool have a great chance to get all three points as a result of this situation, and I am sure Chris Hughton might just feel a little smug and have a wry smile on his face if they do so.
